Mexilhoeira da Carregação

Long is the history of the Mexilhoeira da Carregação factories. Therefore, imagining and designing a future for this place was, for us, an enormous privilege.

Extended along one of the banks of the Arado River, this space has a unique location, which takes advantage of an unobstructed view over the calm waters of the river, which, not far from there, flows into the sea.

This Algarve oasis, built on degraded structures, was able to impress us at first sight, with all the immense potential that it promised to have. We surrendered at the start. Despite being abandoned, in our imagination, a thousand ideas emerged on how to give a new life to the old factory.

Given the size and enormous potential of this place, we quickly decided that the most economically viable program for this project would be the hotel business. For this reason, and to diversify the offer, we decided to offer a mix of hotel rooms and apartments associated with hotel services. This is a concept that has proven to be enormously successful today, for several reasons, including the possibility of integrating apartment sales into the benefit of golden visas.

In the past, this site was made up of two factories: the “Fábrica de Portugal” and the “Fábrica do Mexilhão”. Inside, hundreds of workers were dedicated to the fish canning industry. Having settled in humble homes around the factories, these were the people who inhabited that land at the time. Thus, the land itself ended up gaining a name in honor of the activity and the predominant people there, coming to be called “Mexilhoeira da Carregação”.

Since the construction sector is one of the most polluting, for us, sustainability will always be a priority. In addition to environmental concerns, our choice was also related to the conceptual strength we attribute to rehabilitation. Transforming an old factory into a Hotel is undoubtedly an interesting challenge, in which the result can be surprising.

Maintaining the industrial architectural design was a consensual decision. We believe that it is in memory that places draw their character. From the first day we saw in the pre-existing factory structures an enormous presence of the past lived there. In addition to the history unveiled in the plan of this building, its implantation in L also allowed to expand the horizons of its potential, by allowing the hotel to enjoy a privileged view over the river in the future.

Creating a link between the past and the future, through the lines that draw this project, we arrived, then, at a result of which we can say that we are very proud. Preserving the essence that marks this place and makes it special, we brought an abandoned past and crumbled to ashes, to the new times. On the banks of the River Arade, we can see an immensely promising future for this hotel with a wonderful location, where its guests can truly feel at peace, in a space of serenity and deep reflection.

Having absorbed and appreciated the history of these factories from the first moment we got to know them, we decided that the way forward would be to rehabilitate the buildings. We strongly believe that, nowadays, rehabilitation should always be a choice to consider, as it is an option that comprises a considerably smaller ecological footprint when compared to demolition and subsequent construction.

Longa é a história das fábricas da Mexilhoeira da Carregação. Por isso, imaginar e desenhar um futuro para este lugar, foi, para nós, um enorme privilégio.

Estendido ao longo de uma das margens do Rio Arado, este espaço tem uma localização única, que tira partido de uma vista desafogada sobre as águas mansas do rio, que, não longe dali, desagua no mar.

Este oásis algarvio, erguido sobre estruturas degradadas, teve a capacidade de nos impressionar à primeira vista, com todo o potencial imenso que prometia vir a ter. Ficámos rendidos à partida. Apesar de abandonada, na nossa imaginação, surgiram mil ideias de como dar uma nova vida à antiga fábrica. 

Dada a dimensão e o enorme potencial deste lugar, rapidamente decidimos que o programa com maior viabilidade económica para este projeto, seria o de hotelaria. Por essa razão, e para diversificar a oferta, decidimos propor um misto de quartos de hotel e apartamentos associados aos serviços hoteleiros. Este é um conceito que tem demonstrado um enorme sucesso atualmente, por diversas razões, entre as quais a possibilidade de integrar as vendas dos apartamentos no benefício dos vistos gold.

No passado, este local era composto por duas fábricas: A “Fábrica de Portugal” e a “Fábrica do Mexilhão”. No seu interior, centenas de trabalhadores dedicavam-se à indústria das conservas de peixe. Tendo-se estabelecido em casas humildes em torno das fábricas, este era o povo que habitava aquela terra na época. Assim, a própria terra acabou por ganhar um nome em honra da atividade e das gentes ali predominantes, vindo-se a chamar de “Mexilhoeira da Carregação''. 

Tendo absorvido e apreciado a história destas fábricas desde o primeiro momento em que a conhecemos, decidimos que o caminho a seguir seria pela reabilitação das construções. Acreditamos vivamente que, nos dias que correm, a reabilitação deve ser sempre uma escolha a ponderar, pois é uma opção que compreende uma pegada ecológica consideravelmente menor quando comparada com uma demolição e posterior construção. Sendo o setor da construção um dos mais poluentes, para nós, a sustentabilidade será sempre  uma prioridade. Para além da preocupação ambiental, a nossa escolha prendeu-se também com a força conceptual que atribuímos à reabilitação. Transformar uma antiga fábrica num Hotel, é um desafio sem dúvida interessante, em que o resultado pode ser surpreendente. 

Manter a traça arquitectónica industrial foi uma decisão consensual. Acreditamos que é na memória que os lugares desenham o seu carácter. Desde o primeiro dia que vimos nas estruturas fabris pré-existentes uma enorme presença do passado ali vivido. Para além da história desvendada na planta deste edifício, também a sua implantação em L permitiu expandir os horizontes do seu  potencial, ao permitir que, do hotel, venha futuramente a disfrutar de uma vista privilegiada sobre o rio.

Criando um elo entre o passado e o futuro, através das linhas que desenham este projeto, chegámos, então, a um resultado do qual podemos dizer que nos orgulhamos bastante. Preservando a essência que marca este lugar e faz dele especial, trouxemos um passado abandonado e desfeito em cinzas, para os novos tempos. Nas margens do Rio Arade, avistamos, então, um futuro imensamente promissor, para este hotel com uma situação maravilhosa, onde os seus hóspedes se poderão sentir verdadeiramente em paz, num espaço de serenidade e reflexão profundas.
